Why Do I Need Asbestos Training?
Asbestos is a heat and fire resistant mineral that was commonly used in building materials like flooring, ceilings, roofing and industrial systems insulation. Asbestos is a highly toxic material that can cause a multitude of severe health effects including asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. Workers in construction and industrial settings are often exposed to asbestos occupationally when the material is unknowingly disturbed or removed during worksite practices, or proper hygiene practices are not understood or followed. Appropriately classifying asbestos operations and knowing what controls are required to minimize worker exposure is essential for the protection of all the workers.
Training is an important component in preventing worker exposure to asbestos. Control methods, measures and procedures can only be as effective as the workers carrying them out; employers and workers must have the knowledge required to protect themselves and others from injury and illness.
When Do I Require Type 1 & 2 Asbestos Operations Training?
The Occupational Health & Safety Act requires employers to make workers aware of workplace hazards and to take every reasonable precaution for worker protection. Section 19 of Ontario Regulation 278/05: Designated Substance – Asbestos on Construction Projects and In Buildings and Repair Operations requires employers to provide instruction and training to all workers performing Type 1 or 2 asbestos operations.
Please note that this course does not cover the requirements for Type 1 or 2 asbestos operations. For that training, please see our Type 1 & 2 Asbestos Operations Worker Training, which is designed for workers performing Type 1, Type 2, and/or Glove Bag asbestos work and meets the educational requirements of O. Reg. 278/05.
