Frequently Asked Questions

Is Industrial Fall Protection the same as Working at Heights?

No. Fall arrest training, sometimes referred to as fall prevention training, is another type of working at heights training. However, it is important to note that fall arrest training does not replace the Ontario Chief Prevention Officer-approved Working at Heights (WAH) training. Workers required by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development (MLITSD) to complete WAH training cannot substitute it with fall arrest training.

Unlike WAH training, which is specifically designed for the construction industry, fall arrest training is broader and can be customized to suit the unique needs of various industries.

IST’s Fall Prevention course is tailored for individuals working in industrial establishments, mining operations, the healthcare sector, and other workplaces that do not fall under the category of construction projects. This flexibility makes it ideal for industries requiring specialized safety training outside the scope of construction-related work.

How do I know if I need Working at Heights vs Fall Protection?

Any workers who may use any of the following methods of fall protection are required to complete a Working at Heights (WAH) training program that has been approved by Ontario’s Chief Prevention Office under Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development (MLITSD).

  1. A travel restraint system.
  2. A fall restricting system.
  3. A fall arrest system.
  4. A safety net.
  5. A work belt.
  6. A safety belt. (O. Reg. 297/13, s.6)
