Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC)

JHSC certification training provides participants with the knowledge and information they need to be an effective health and safety representative.

What Is JHSC?

A Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) is a group made up of representatives from both workers and employers, working together to enhance workplace health and safety. In Ontario, any business with 20 or more regular employees is required to establish a JHSC. The committee must include at least two certified members who have completed a two-part training through a Chief Prevention Officer (CPO) approved provider, following the standards set by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does CPO Approved mean?

In March 2016, the 2014 Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) Certification Training Standards came into effect meaning that all JHSC Certification training programs and training providers had to be approved by Ontario’s Chief Prevention Officer (CPO).

What if I was certified prior to March 2016?

Individuals who were previously certified under the 1996 Standard do not have to take the JHSC Certification — Refresher training every three years.

How long after taking my Part One do I need to take my Part Two?

To become a certified member of a JHSC, you must take the Part Two course within twelve months of completing Part One.
