Course Details
This comprehensive training program is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate Vehicle Mounted Aerial Devices (VMADs), commonly known as bucket trucks.
Participants will develop a strong understanding of equipment components, safe operating procedures, hazard recognition, and applicable legislative requirements. The program emphasizes real-world application, combining in-class interactive theory with hands-on training to ensure operators can confidently perform tasks in a variety of work environments.
A strong focus is placed on stability, fall protection, and emergency response, ensuring operators are prepared not only for routine operation, but also for abnormal and high-risk situations.

Course Duration:
8 hours
Training Is Valid For:
3 years from the date of successful completion.
Materials Provided:
Course materials and participant workbooks.
Certificate Issued:
Upon completion, students will be issued a wallet card showing proof of their training.

Practical Skills Evaluation
Following the completion of the theory portion, participants will undergo a practical skills evaluation to demonstrate competency in:
- Pre-operational inspection
- Equipment setup and stabilization
- Safe operation and maneuvering
- Use of controls
- Application of fall protection
Important Notes:
- Practical evaluations are dependent on available time following theory training
- Each evaluation may take up to 30 minutes per participant, depending on skill level
- For new operators, practical evaluations must be completed within 90 days of theory training to meet competency expectations

Understand the requirements of a competent operator, including the knowledge, skills, and responsibilities required for safe operation.
Hazard Recognition
Identify workplace hazards, including visibility, terrain, weather conditions, and struck-by risks when working near traffic and roadways.
Stability & Load Capacity
Apply stability principles, including slope limits, outriggers, stabilizers, capacity plates, and operating limits to prevent tip-overs.
Equipment Types & Components
Become familiar types of bucket trucks and boom configurations, insulating categories, and the function of ground and bucket controls.
Emergency Response & Rescue
Understand emergency procedures and rescue requirements to respond effectively in the event of an incident.
Pre-Operational Inspections
Conduct pre-use inspections, complete required documentation, and understand periodic inspection and testing requirements.
Legal Requirements
Understand applicable legislation, operator responsibilities, and the consequences of unsafe operation.
Personal Protective Equipment
Select and use the appropriate PPE to protect against workplace hazards while operating aerial devices.
